Description
We seek motivated and curious M.Sc., Ph.D., or Postdoctoral candidates to join funded research projects focused on modeling subsurface geothermal flow and coupled physical and chemical processes, with applications to the energy transition.
Background:
Understanding geothermal flow processes in the subsurface, and their coupling with chemical reactions and mechanical effects, is essential for advancing the transition to a low-carbon energy system. These processes play a central role in geothermal energy production, the exploration of natural (geological) hydrogen fuel and critical minerals, subsurface stability and earthquake risk, and in the emergence of intriguing natural phenomena such as cave system formation.
Our research addresses these challenges through a combination of mathematical and computational modeling, informed by field observations. This interdisciplinary framework—bridging physics, engineering, and Earth-system processes—provides a powerful approach for investigating coupled flow, transport, reaction, and deformation in subsurface energy systems.
The research will involve:
•
Mathematical modeling of coupled hydro-geological processes related to geologic hydrogen, hypogene cave formation and geothermal systems.
•
Analysis and summarization of results in scientific reports and publications.
•
Optional: Integration of fieldwork.
Requirements:
•
B.Sc./M.Sc./Ph.D., degree in Engineering, Physics and Earth Sciences (or a related field).
•
Strong quantitative background and experience in numerical modeling (MATLAB/Python/COMSOL) – a major advantage.
•
Ability to work independently, scientific curiosity, and initiative – strong assets.
•
Knowledge in one or more of the following areas—flow, transport, mechanics, and reactive processes – an advantage.
•
Interest and suitability for fieldwork – an advantage.
•
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
•
Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team.
The research will be conducted under the supervision of Dr. Roi Roded (Tel-Hai University), Prof. Einat Aharonov and Prof. Amos Frumkin (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem), within an international research network.
A flexible start date (2026) is offered, along with a competitive living stipend and financial support for suitable candidates.
